Undiluted Simple Green in a spray bottle, and a power washer. Making sure to let it dry before I drive it.

Do you have to avoid washing parts of the engine? I've been wanting to do this forever but don't want to ruin anything.

Not really. You just gotta leave it to dry overnight and disconnect the battery before beginning. And use an air compressor to blow the water out of the spark plug wells and any other places where water could accumulate.

Looks great. But you absolutely do not want to use a power washer on your engine. I learned this the hard way when an ignition coil went up in smoke. Thankfully, that's all the damage I did.

This is by no means definitive, but I'm totally OCD, and this is how I clean my engine now...

Cover all electrical components with plastic wrap. Including the ignition coil connectors. Fill any area where water can collect with rags.
Make sure the engine is cool but not cold
Apply an engine de-greaser. I like Optimum Power Clean spray
Agitate degreaser with a detail brush into areas where dirt gets trapped
Use a nozzle with a light mist setting to rinse. Use quick back-and-forth passes, letting the degreaser run off on its own.
Wipe down engine with an old towel
Use a leaf blower to get water out of crevices, be careful not to force water into electrical areas
Remove all rags and plastiwrap
Run the engine till warm to evaporate any water that's collected
Detail plastic and hoses with a dressing. I like Adams In-N-Out spray because it looks factory. Something thicker like Black Wow will look more dressed.

It only takes about a half hour. Doing this once or twice a year will keep your engine looking factory fresh.

Not the first time I do it. Never had any problems either.
